Maintaining Your Roof

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home because it acts as a structural support and keeps the elements off of your head. The roof takes a great deal of punishment from mother nature, and can therefore be very tough to maintain. However, the better you maintain your roof, the longer it will last, and replacing a roof can set you back financially. Here are a few different ways that you can maintain your roof so that it lasts as long as possible.

Cleaning

One of the easiest actions that you can take is to get on the roof and physically clean all of the unwanted debris off the roof. Remember to take care when removing larger items such as branches. You never want to drag anything across the roof because it could damage the shingles. Instead, pick it up and remove it. When cleaning the roof, you also want to pick a sunny day to reduce the risk of slipping. However, you do not want to be on the roof when the weather is too hot because the shingles may be soft and easy to damage.

Gutters

You will want to clean out the gutters every month if possible. Many people do not realize how important gutters can be to your home. The gutters transport water off of the roof and away from the foundation. If the gutter is clogged, then there is a very good chance that the water is not being transported off the roof properly. If this is the case, then the water can get backed up and start to seep into the shingles. This can cause significant damage to the roof. To avoid this, you will want to clean out the gutters of your home every month.

Chimney And Valleys

The main portion of your roof may be completed, but it is time to inspect the valleys and the chimney. The valleys are the areas where all the water drains and are therefore vital spots on the roof. Visually inspect the valleys for any damage. Check the chimney for any cracked bricks and mortar. Clean all the soot off of the chimney with a brush. This can keep your roof from catching on fire. The time and the effort that you put into cleaning and maintaining your roof will pay big dividends when your roof lasts years longer, and you will save money, too.
